Ashgold stretch lead

Ashgold’s championship aspiration was yesterday given a boost when they overpowered stubborn Medeama FC 2-1 at the Len Clay Stadium at Obuasi.

The miners had to sweat for victory as the visitors scored the opener through Kwasi Bonso as early as the seventh minute.

But the miners worked hard and managed to pull the equaliser in the 32nd minute through Didier Kore.

Medeama held on strongly but could not resist the promptings of the homesters and yielded 10 mintes to full time when Kore converted a penalty awarded the miners.

Hearts out of relegation bracket but…

With only three rounds of matches left to close the Ghana Premier League, only two clubs are completely out of the relegation permutations.

Hearts of Oak managed another win, beating Bechem United by a lone goal to move up the ladder and away from the relegation bracket they had occupied to draw the ire of their fans.

Inter Allies hold Asante Kotoko

Tema-based Inter Allies yesterday held Kumasi Asante Kotoko to a goalless draw in their First Capital Plus League encounter at the Tema park.

Indeed, Kotoko looked the more determined side and as early as the second minute succeeded in pushing a goal inside the net but the referee had already whistled for a foul. A decision Kotoko supporters fumed about in the stands.

Again in the 20th minute a deadly passing combination between Obed Owusu and Amed Toure saw the former powering the ball over the bar to the relief of the home side.

The highly physical battle between the two sides saw a barren first half. On resumption, Inter Allies lifted their play and on several occasions, the trio of Lord Ofosuhene, Sheriif Deo Mohammed and Mohammed Sulley mounted pressure on the visitors who succeeded in repelling all the attacks.

Head Coach of Asante Kotoko, David Duncan, spotting his usual light green polo shirt, conceded that the game was one in which few chances were created by both sides.

In his view the goal which was disallowed was a good goal. “It was a fair result though but I thought we had been hard done by the goal that was disallowed” he said.

Chelsea host Ashgold Sunday

Table toppers, Ashgold will be hoping to move a step close to the First Capital Plus Premier League title on Sunday when they travel to the Golden City Park at Berekum to play Berekum Chelsea.

The Aboakese lads opened-up a three-point buffer over their rivals following a 2-1 victory over Medeama SC at the weekend and a repeat performance against fourth-place Chelsea will see them close in on the title with three games to end the season.

The musical chairs at the other end of the table continues at the Bechem Park where second from bottom, Bechem United tied on 34 points with Heart of Lions and Accra Great Olympics host eight place Wa All Stars while relegation threatened Lions engage title-chasing Aduana Stars at the Kpando Park.

Elsewhere, 11th placed Accra Hearts of Oak will be looking to continue their recent revival when they visit Medeama SC at the Tarkwa T&A, 10th placed Liberty Professionals host third place Inter Allies at the Carl Reindorf Park, Olympics clash with fifth place West Africa Football Academy.

In other intriguing ties of week 28, defending champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko will be looking to improve on their sixth place ranking when they play already relegated Brong Ahafo United at the Baba Yara Stadium and 12th placed New Edubiase United lock horns with Sekondi Hasaacas at the Len Clay Stadium.
